Installing the right Players and codecs

Installing the right Software and Codecs
If you can't play a file then it may be because you don't have the right codec or player installed. A codec is a little bit of software that runs on your machine to decode video/audio files so you can play them. Some codecs get installed with video players like Quicktime and Video Lan, some are separate like Xvid. Here is a guide to what codecs you may want to install.

If you want to install a whole set of codecs on your pc and you are running windows you may wish to download a codec pack and install that. There is a link to download one with popular codecs here.

If not then here are some links to install other popular ones one by one.

Players

Video Lan: Download Video Lan here
Real Media: Windows Real Alternative Player: Download real Alternative Windows
Linux Real Player: Download Linux Real Player
Mac Users need the Real Media Player Real Media Players for Mac
Quicktime: Download quicktime Player

Extra Bits / Codecs

Xvid: Download Xvid codec - Mac / Windows
AC3 Audio: Download AC3 codec Instructions for installation are on that page

Lame Mp3 Audio:
Download Lame Mp3 Instructions for installation are the same as the AC3 codec [unzip files, For installation right click on LameACM.inf and select Install ]

Trying to work out what Codec someone has used so you can play a file can be a pain in the arse. So it's good to remember that when you are creating files for other people. When you create a file - why not call it noborder_manchester_april16_2005_xvid_mp3.avi instead of demo.avi ?
